| Return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece |
Dear I write to you in connection with the repeated requests by the Government of Greece for the return of the Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles. The most recent request was made on the opening of the new Acropolis Museum in June. All such requests made of the British Government have so far met with a negative response. In my view, this nation has no legal or moral right, to retain these great historical artefacts. It is indeed a travesty whereby half of these magnificent items, sculpted thousands of years ago by the artisans of Ancient Greece and now of global historic interest, are in the British Museum and the other half in Athens! They should be re-united, to be admired and studied as a whole. As a British Citizen (and tax payer) I strongly object to the continued retention of these items in my country and I ask that you bring all appropriate political pressure to bear on the Government to return the Marbles to Greece. Discussions with the Government of Greece to negotiate their return should be commenced at the earliest opportunity. I look forward to your reply, Yours sincerely, |
